How welcome & leave messages look

On Discord, welcome and leave messages guide new members and keep the community informed in a clear, visual way.

The message you configured appears in the channel you chose. The variables are resolved dynamically:

  • {user} is replaced by a clickable mention of the user (for example @JohnDoe). The member gets a mention notification when they arrive, if their role lets them read the channel.
  • {username} shows their raw name without mentioning them (for example JohnDoe), avoiding a needless ping.
  • {server} shows the exact name of your Discord server.
  • {memberCount} gives the member’s numeric position on the server (for example member number 1500).

If the Welcome image option is enabled, Kotbo generates a personalised welcome card:

  • The image includes the new member’s circular avatar.
  • It shows their username in a styled font.
  • It uses the custom background image you provided (or Kotbo’s default background).
  • It is sent as an attachment right after the text message.

So that Kotbo can post announcements and images without trouble, make sure its role has the following permissions in the channel you chose (for example #welcome):

  1. View Channel (VIEW_CHANNEL): essential for the bot to detect and reach the channel.
  2. Send Messages (SEND_MESSAGES): required to post the welcome or leave text.
  3. Embed Links (EMBED_LINKS): recommended for clean message formatting.
  4. Attach Files (ATTACH_FILES): mandatory if you use welcome image cards. Without it, sending the card will fail.

The dashboard preview simulates the visual result, but it does not test the bot’s rights on your server. Before making the channel public:

  1. Save your changes on the dashboard.
  2. Invite a secondary account (a test account) to your Discord server.
  3. Check that the message is sent correctly and that the card displays.
  4. Have the test account leave to check the leave message as well.
