Nickname moderation
The Nickname moderation module automatically renames non-compliant nicknames as soon as a member joins the server or changes their nickname. It is configured from the Nicknames tab of the Filters page.
Activation
Section titled “Activation”Once the module is on, the bot checks nicknames and replaces a non-compliant one with non-compliant nickname | automod.
A Discord command also lets you run a manual check on a member.
When the bot checks
Section titled “When the bot checks”Two triggers, independent of each other:
- New members joining the server
- Members changing their nickname
If both are off, Kotbo shows a warning: no trigger, the bot will never check nicknames.
What it refuses
Section titled “What it refuses”Three criteria, each turned on separately:
- Nicknames made only of invisible characters: blocks the empty nicknames that float to the top of the member list.
- Words from the global list: racism, threats, insults, sexual content, LGBTphobia, hate. This list is maintained by Kotbo and shared across all servers.
- Your custom words: the list specific to your server.
If no criterion is active, Kotbo warns that the bot checks nicknames but has nothing to look for.
Discord’s native AutoMod rule
Section titled “Discord’s native AutoMod rule”An extra option creates Discord’s own AutoMod rule on nicknames. It shows Discord’s native pop-up and blocks text and voice access for members who break the rule.
Managing banned words
Section titled “Managing banned words”The Banned words block has two tabs:
Custom
Section titled “Custom”- Enter a word or a fragment of a word, then click Add.
- Each entry shows its word, its category (Custom, Racism, Threat, Sexual, LGBTphobia, Hate, Insult) and its Active state.
- A deleted word can be restored right away with the Undo button on the confirmation message.
Global
Section titled “Global”These words are managed globally by Kotbo and are read-only: they cannot be changed from your server.
Exceptions (whitelist)
Section titled “Exceptions (whitelist)”The Moderation exceptions block prevents false positives.
- Allowed nicknames (exact): these complete nicknames will never be moderated, even if they contain a banned word. Useful for a legitimate pseudonym that a word fragment wrongly flags.
- Exempt members (bypass): enter a member’s Discord ID (17 to 20 digits). They will never be renamed, whatever nickname they choose.
Removing an exception can also be undone right after the action.
